Nearly 3 million residents live in student housing on college campuses across the country. Yet, many of these students have a gap in coverage to protect their personal property from losses and are incapable for paying for unintentional damages that they are liable for. With a reported more than 17,000 annual thefts reported on campuses and nearly 3,000 fires, schools are implementing renters insurance programs to help students overcome losses while also protecting the school from unpaid claims. The presentation will feature national research from student housing officials and discuss efforts by risk managers to reduce the property losses through implementing official renters programs. The discussion will also include trends in off-campus student housing operators, where more than 2/3 of operators now require proof of liability insurance coverage. The panel of risk managers will discuss three alternative ways to implement an official program.
Learning Objectives:
 Learn how a large university system, a public and private university are
aiming to reduce property and liability losses by adopting official insurance
education and renters insurance programs.
 Official renters insurance programs are those where schools fully disclose
resident / student liability liability as part of the university housing process
AND provide the opportunity to mitigate this risk through a convenient
enrollment process.
 Discuss alternative ways to mitigate the risks to both institutions and
students through official renters insurance programs.
