(CE) Common Horse Sense in Managing Sports Medicine Risks

Given the high profile of intercollegiate athletics on campus, and the potential litigation from a poor outcome impacting the institution, collaborating with the sports medicine operation is highly recommended for any university risk management professional. This panel discussion will focus on key areas of liability in the sports medicine operation, legal considerations, and claims processes for athletic injuries. It will offer best practices risk prevention measures for consideration as well. Each panelist will speak for 10-12 minutes followed by a question and answer session. The panel facilitator will survey select higher education risk management professionals prior to the session to obtain questions to pose to the panelist. The audience will also be able to ask questions.
Learning Objectives:
 Understand the key areas of potential liability to sports
medicine operations. Topics including, pre‐participation
physical examination process, medical decisions, concussion
policy, student athlete mental health considerations and
emergency action planning.
 Understand the practical steps to mitigate risk and plan for
potential liabilities to better care for student athletes and to
manage risk to universities.
