Higher Education Compliance: An Enterprise Approach

Assuring compliance with the myriad of laws and regulations facing institutions of higher education can seem to be an impossible task–and we all know the stakes are high. However, there are many institutions leading the way to a centralized model that places leadership of the effort with a compliance officer or committee to systematically improve the process and assign "compliance owners” to each area. This session will present a model for viewing compliance management much the same as enterprise risk management and discuss the specific areas higher education institutions need to address.

Scott Wightman began his career with Arthur J. Gallagher & Company in St. Louis in 1983, working predominately with public entities and other non-profits. During most of the 1990s, he served as risk manager with Venture Stores and then as director of risk management for Saint Louis University. In 1999, he rejoined Gallagher and now serves as a regional director in their higher education practice group.
